Fouling is the accumulation of unwanted material on surfaces. The fouling material can consist of either living organisms (biofouling) or a non-living substance (inorganic or organic). Fouling is caused by the adhesion of proteins, polysacharids and bacteria on a surface (e.g. textiles). Bio-fouling is a well-known problem in the maritime industry (eg. ships, cables, aquaculture nets...). But also outdoor and indoor textiles are subject to the deposition of organic and inorganic material, deteriating as such the durability of the fabrics. AFFITEX will examine the use of various antifouling technologies for textile and film coating that focus on environmental friendly and resource efficient techniques. Low surface tension coatings and technologies used in textile coating will be evaluated according to their antifouling capacity and specific mechanical requirements.
