The R&D activities of Centexbel-VKC support the textile, plastic converting and related companies with the explicit aim to reinforce the innovation capacity of small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) and to assist the industry in its transition to a sustainable future. As a research institution created by and for the industry, we initiate and participate in publicly funded pre-competitive research projects and in market-oriented contract research projects.

To guarantee total impartiality and to avoid any conflict of interest, we explicitly exclude all product development in those areas covered by the CE certification scope for which we are accredited.

Development of bio-based materials with functional properties for high-volume consumer products and better performances than fossil-based plastics in comparable applications.

Smart textiles are able to sense and respond to changes in their environment, increasing as such their functionality to the wearer. The main application fields of smart textiles are safety and protection (e.g. technical textiles and workwear), medical support (e.g. monitoring of the elderly) and performance enhancement (e.g. fitness and sport).

Development of a novel type of thermal and electrical conductive compound with high conductivity and improved processability in a wide range of processing techniques, that will broaden the scope of possible applications for conductive composites.

The Interreg NWE project CurCol aims to demonstrate economic potential for the production chains from regionally produced plants to colorants in packaging.

Through this project we want to transfer the expertise of Centexbel-VKC in the field of melt processing to the textile coating sector.

Acceleration of advanced manufacturing by demonstrating advanced composite manufacturing in close cooperation with companies.

Due to high population density, strong industrialisation and climate change, Belgium is increasingly struggling with water stress. Water is an indispensable raw material for companies in the process industry. Despite a favourable trend in water consumption and the water efficiency of businesses, their water stress remains worryingly high.

This project will focus on biobased plasticizers, antioxidants, UV stabilizers and flame retardants.

The BioCoat project aims to accelerate the transition to bio-based coatings by providing coating companies with knowledge about the formulation, application, performance and applications of bio-based coatings.

The purpose of the Project is to ensure the ongoing innovation in the European Fashion-Tech sector by providing emerging talents with relevant competencies and know-how to enter the jobs market.
