Chenille

Fil constitué de petits fils très courts insérés lors du retordage entre deux fils de maintien et qui donne un aspect "chenille". Le fil est habituellement fabriqué en coton, mais aussi d'acrylique, rayon ou d'oléofines.

Chenille may refer to either a type of yarn or fabric made from it. Chenille is the French word for caterpillar whose fur the yarn is supposed to resemble. Today, the chenille yarn is manufactured by placing short lengths of yarn, called the "pile", between two "core yarns" and then twisting the yarn together. The edges of these piles then stand at right angles to the yarn’s core, giving chenille both its softness and its characteristic look. The yarn is commonly manufactured from cotton, but can also be made using acrylic, rayon and olefin.

Chenille verwijst zowel naar een soort garen als naar een stof die gemaakt is van dit garen. De naam komt van het Franse woord voor rups, waar het garen uiterlijk op lijkt. Een dunne draad wordt omwonden met een dikke, zacht gesponnen draad. Na het twisten wordt deze dikke draad over de lengte van het garen doorgesneden, waardoor de draadeindjes uit gaan staan, het zogenaamde haar. Naast natuurlijke grondstoffen zoals katoen of linnen voor de ketting en wol of zijde voor de inslag, worden ook kunstgarens zoals kunstzijde en acryl gebruikt.
